JOHN DOWNTON OAM

John Downton was awarded the OAM for services to visual arts as a landscape and maritime artist and for services to the community IN 2017. John re-trained as an artist in 1973, after many years as a watchmaker. “When all the electronics came in I had to retrain as something and I thought I may as well retrain in something I like,” John said. “That was 48 years ago and I’m still painting seven days a week – Christmas Day is my annual leave.” John has exhibited work in Sydney, Melbourne, Ireland, Japan, Korea and America. He spent 15 years travelling across rural Australia with renowned artist Leonard Long, painting the rugged landscapes he explored. John is also the official artist for the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Nowra, with the gallery named in his honour in 2014. Between 1999 and 2000 he travelled to East Timor and painted around 50 pieces depicting the naval and peacekeeping activities. When he’s not painting, John spends a lot of time judging at regional shows. He has judged many exhibitions, including the Sydney Royal Easter Show, Nowra Show, Kiama Art Show and Bega Valley Art Awards. Born in Sydney in 1939, John studied at the Royal Art society of NSW under the tutelage of Kenneth Green, Allan Hanson, Arthur Murch and George Duncan. He was the first artist ever to be invited to exhibit at the Mitchell Library in Sydney. Invited by the Irish to hold a one man exhibition in Dublin as part of Dublin’s official “Cultural City of Europe” celebration. John is a member of the Australian Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Art society of NSW. John Carey Downton remains true to the integrity of his art, delighting us with his sense of colour and light, capturing the spirit of the vast, rugged Australian landscape, the glorious majesty of the mountains and the subtle tranquility of the rural countryside.

Julia Lack - Acrylic

Julia studied for a Diploma in Fine Art and has resumed her career after marriage and two children. With a love for vibrant colours, she started painting at a very early age. After completing her education she then decided to travel, exploring Central and Northern Australia to gain a feeling for and connection to the land. Her “Tracker” series combined bold colours and found objects which captured the essence of the land. Overseas travel took her to Canada, her birthplace, where she reconnected with people from her early childhood. Now, with her children at a more manageable age, she has more time to devote to her art and is exploring new areas using acrylics in abstract and semi-realist form.

Maryanne Holmes - Watercolour and Oil

Maryanne's work is unique and distinctive showing subdued sunlight emerging through cloud cover, mist-shrouded landmarks or fishing boats and yachts on lazy stretches of rippling water. Her most recent work reflects her travels through Europe, the United Kingdom and exploring Australia, with emphasis on rural scenes of France, Tuscany and the castles and churches of Scotland, Italy and England. She evokes an ethereal feel in her work, the softness of which attracts the viewer particularly to the moodiness of the skies. Maryanne’s paintings have been sold widely within Australia as well as in the United States, Japan and the United Kingdom. Maryanne was painting tutor for Ecliptic Gallery's 2009 Holiday in France
